By Steve Smothers

Churches like the people that collectively represent them can go through tremendous transition. Most people don’t like change in their own lives and certainly don’t enjoy change in their church. After all, church is supposed to be stable and unchanging. In a world of uncertainty and constant shifting, the church is supposed to be the same—always --isn’t it?

If we view the church as an organization or institution that preserves the past, then perhaps this view is correct. However, if we take our vantage from the Bible and early church history we will quickly discover that the church is something very different. The church is not a building; it is a people. The pastor is not a performer and the congregation is not an audience. Church is not even an event. The congregation are not consumers as when watching a movie or eating at a restaurant. It’s not even what church can do for us, rather it’s what we can do for God, His people and our neighbors (Mark 12:29-31). In other words, we don’t go to a building or event called church to primarily receive, we are the church 24/7 and when we gather it is to participate rather than spectate (1 Cor. 14:26). The church is to be a living, vibrant group of people who gather together to listen to God, follow His leading and make disciples in the flow of daily life (Matthew 28:18-20).

So, what did an early church gathering look like? Act 2:42(NLT) describes this gathering: All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.
Recently, Community Fellowship has begun transitioning our church into a network of Simple Churches that meet in homes, cafes, workplaces, college campuses, etc. Our dream is to be carriers of the kingdom of God wherever we go. No longer do we require people to come to our building or our event to encounter Christ. We now desire to be the church 24/7, following Christ and representing His love, acceptance, forgiveness, care, salvation and hope to our friends and neighbors.

Is church really that simple? Is it really our job to simply be and make disciples? I challenge you to read the New Testament with new eyes and find your simple community of faith.

This Sunday marks the beginning of a new era at Community Fellowship as we have our first official Simple Church meeting at the Cearley’s home at 10am. We will begin with a simple brunch together, so bring your favorite breakfasty food.

Our meeting will be very relaxed and informal (family feel--hey, it’s Super Bowl Sunday). How can you prepare, you ask? Bring a chair, Bible, guitar if you like, and a prepared heart to share (see 1 Cor. 14:26).

A few of you have asked about starting your own Simple Church gathering. This is AWESOME! All that the overseers of CF ask is that you go through the Greenhouse training offered March 23-25. CF will reduce the cost to only $60 for a team rate of 5 or more (the actual cost is $110 for a group & $135 for an individual). CF will subsidize each team (group) member $50 per person. All we ask is that you sign up ASAP and put a $30 deposit down.

The Cearley’s live at:
15701 FM 150 West
Driftwood, TX 78619

I look forward to seeing you Sunday,
Steve
